      CyberKnife

CyberKnife, a non-invasive radiosurgery treatment device that has a role in the treatment of cancerous tumors. It provides sub-millimeter exactitude in anyplace within the body and is especially utilized in multiple tumors cases where operation is not an option.

The CyberKnife Radiosurgery System is a linear accelerator that produces 6 MV X-rays; the robot sensitivity is reported as 0.2 mm, weighing 140 kg, with a robotic patient bed that can move in 6 directions, placed on a 6-joint industrial robot. Unlike classical stereotactic radiation therapy methods, CyberKnife combines a computer-controlled robot system with a guiding system in order to determine the location of the target with imaging and provide it to be irradiated to minimize tumors.

Thousands of patients around the world are treated with the CyberKnife device and lots of clinical studies associated with this are revealed in medical journals. Over one hundred patients are treated worldwide. More than 1/2 of them have received treatment on alternative elements of the body that square measure different from the brain region. CyberKnife is a radiosurgery device that was developed in step with radiation technology, received Food and Drug Administration approval within the USA in 1999, and is in use.

CyberKnife method is used in respiratory organ cancers, prostate cancers, brain tumors, head and neck cancers, bone tumors, and exocrine gland cancers. It is also used for metastases that cannot be treated by different means in cases where the neoplasm has been replaced by respiratory or bowel movements, respiratory organ, and liver tumors. This treatment is also effective in funicular diseases that are very sensitive to radiation. A second application is created for tumors that have previously received radiotherapy but have recurred in the same space.

While CyberKnife treats malignant or benign tumors with intense radiation beams, it does not affect healthy tissues. This important point provides solutions to diseases that were previously impossible to treat.

The treatment is not an open surgical procedure, despite its name (knife). The treatment duration is significantly shortened by giving high doses of radiation from various angles. Depending on the size, location, proximity to important tissues and organs, the type of tumor treatment is usually possible in a day. In some special cases, the treatment period can be extended up to 5 days. In traditional radiotherapy, 5 days a week, a total of 30-40 days in 6-8 weeks is possible.

CyberKnife treatment is a painless application without any incisions or anesthesia and a short period after the treatment, patients can leave the hospital and return to their normal lives. Patients treated with the CyberKnife do not emit radiation. The patient can even hug a newborn baby after leaving the treatment.
